The Role of Libraries in Economic Hard Times on "The Diane Rehm Show"

On January 7th “The Diane Rehm Show”, which airs on WAMU radio and is syndicated on many NPR stations, focused on the increased use of public libraries during the economic downturn.

Guests included Carla Hayden, executive director, Enoch Pratt Free Library and past president of the American Library Association, Jim Rettig, President of the American Library Association, and Ginnie Cooper, Chief Librarian for the District of Columbia Public Library.

Americans are saving money, and keeping the looming recession at bay, by going to their local libraries to rent books, CD's, and DVD's. Katie Couric reports.

Libraries in Difficult Economic Times

Here's what's interesting... with any economic downturn, public libraries become more important than ever. Here at HCPL, we have already discovered this to be true. We have seen a rise in circulation, more foot traffic in our buildings, and more online visits. We are seeing more of our traditional patrons who have faithfully used our services over the years, but we have also seen new customers who are only now discovering that we have up-to-date DVD's, music, audio books (in CD as well as MP3 formats), public computers, wifi, and of course, lots and lots of books for all ages.

The American Library Association estimates that 10% more people are visiting libraries than they did 2 years ago. They also estimate a 5% increase in library card registrations.

We are happy that we can continue to provide services to our communities and we thank you, our patrons and customers, for you ongoing support.

Avatars at the Library

Here's just one example of some of the avatars you'll be seeing this summer at the library. Avatars are popular on many Web 2.0 sites including virtual worlds like Second Life, Active Worlds, and Teen Second Life.
