Playaways Coming to the Library

Playaway DeviceIt's a Playaway digital audiobook and it's coming to Harford County. Beginning June 18th, you'll be able to check out a Playaway book just like any other audiobook. It's very simple to use and it's all in one package: the book is pre-loaded on the device and one complimentary battery (about 12 hours) is included. Because so many listeners use and prefer their own earphones, they will not be circulated along with the Playaway. Ear-buds are available for purchase at the circulation desk for a nominal charge of $1.00. Playaways will be available for all ages and genres. Visit your nearest branch and ask about the new Playaways! More information here.

Sheriff's Dept Partner with Library

Officers work with children at the Joppa BranchThroughout the entire month of May, which was nationally recognized as Clean Commute and Bicycle Safety month, a unique community partnership provided a free bike helmet safety program to Harford County adults and children.

Harford County’s Highway Safety Committee and Department of Community Services’ Commuter Assistance Program joined forces with the Harford Velo Cycle Club, One Less Car organization, Harford County’s Public Libraries, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Bel Air Town Police to provide safety experts to serve the public. This volunteer partnership conducted a series of two hour sessions where adults and children could have their bike helmets fitted properly. Safety experts were available to fit and to answer questions about the Maryland Bicycle Helmet Law. Those who attended these sessions entered a raffle to win bike helmets. Approximately one hundred individuals were served.

Transform Yourself: READ!

Metamorphosis, the 2008 Teen Summer Reading Challenge
It happens every time, just as the school year begins to wind down, things really begin heating up at the library as we prepare for our annual Summer Reading Program. This year is no different! We have some very exciting offerings this year as the youngsters "Catch the Reading Bug" (we even have a spider crawling around their page), while the teens are being asked to experience, Metamorphosis (transform yourself through reading). Both programs begin on June 16th, which is less than two weeks away. While supplies last, elementary students will be receiving a backpack/tote bag and middle and high school students will receive a "green-friendly" pen and key ring. Teens are being encouraged to "register online" on the Metamorphosis page.
We offer special thanks to our 2008 Summer Reading Program Sponsors. Here's a list of all of our special Summer Reading Program Kick-off programs or you can search our Events Calendar.
