|
| Programs enhance utilization
of the library and encourage literacy by meeting
the needs and interests of specific patron groups.
Programs may be system wide, serving all patrons,
or may target at-risk or underserved segments of
the population in order to ensure that the needs
of all citizens are met. |
|
| will take library
services to older citizens who do not have access
to branches due to lack of transportation, health
concerns, or other age-related issues. The vehicle
will include materials chosen specifically to meet
the needs and interests of the senior reader, and
will be handicap accessible. For patrons who cannot
access the vehicle, staff will deliver requested
materials to assisted living facilities and senior
centers. The Senior Outreach vehicle will help ensure
that our senior citizens experience the quality
of life they deserve. |

is an innovative, community-based, 6-week reading
program for at-risk youth, designed to bring families
together by encouraging reading and discussion between
generations. Each week 10-15 families receive books
to read at home, and then come together for informal
discussions conducted by experienced leaders. Discussions
continue around a light supper, encouraging a tradition
of family mealtime discussion. Families keep the
books they receive to become a part of their home
library, and all participants receive certificates
of achievement and gift packages. |
|
| brings story times to 34 day care homes
and reaches up to 250 children, many of whom do
not have regular access to the library. The story
times engage children in listening to books and
participating in language-related activities such
as nursery rhymes, finger plays, and games. These
pre-reading learning activities encourage emergent
literacy and reading readiness to support later
school-based reading. Additionally, the program
allows library staff to model reading readiness
activities for day care staff and to provide supportive
information and material. Sponsorship of this program
would provide materials supporting children and
their families in continuing reading readiness activities
at home with “Let’s Find Out,”
an activity book for pre-school children given to
each child, and “Parent & Child,”
a magazine focusing on parenting skills given to
each family. Learn more about Opening
the Gift. |

| and materials support families
in providing language and
reading readiness to children from ages birth to
five years, a critical stage in brain development,
vocabulary acquisition, and development of listening
and group participation
skills, all of which are important factors in school
success. Manipulatives (puzzles and toys)
develop motor skills as well as making the children's
area fun and inviting to families. As
children enter school, support for reading skill
development continues to be crucial to
future success. Supporting this collection will
allow children of all ages to access materials
that are educational and fun. |
