Children's Area Collection and Materials support families in providing language and reading readiness to children in the ages of birth to five years, a critical stage in brain development, vocabulary acquisition, and development of listening and group participation skills, all of which impact future success in school. Additionally, story time programs model read-a-loud skills for parents. Manipulatives (puzzles and toys) develop motor skills as well as making the area fun and inviting to children and parents. As a fast growing, high-density area with a large percentage of families with children, the children’s area will be critical in meeting the needs of Abingdon patrons.
