What type of software do I need to play Audio  Books?

Windows Media Player, version 9 or newer, plus you must also download the Overdrive Media console from their page.

Do I need a library card to check out audio books?
Yes. Overdrive will ask you for it to check out a book, video, or audiobook.
Can I download a chapter at a time or do I need to get the whole book?
You can download individual chapters.
What type of portable devices are compatible with downloadable audio books?
To find out which players will work with both products, go to http://www.playsforsure.com. This tells you which products are Microsoft Windows Media Player compatible. There are also links here to each of the device websites which may be able to help with troubleshooting. Generally, the Overdrive products do not work on iPods or Macs at this time. (as of 4/29/08)
How do I transfer my downloaded book to a portable device (PDA, MP3 player, etc.)?
From the Overdrive media console, select “Transfer/burn” and follow the instructions from there.
How many can I check out at a time?
Overdrive allows a combination of 4 audio books, videos, and ebooks. (new, as of 4/29/08)
Can I renew my Audio books or return them early?

No. Check out periods are as follows:

  • audio book - 2 week loan
  • ebook - 2 week loan
  • video - 1 week loan

You may check out again if no one is waiting, otherwise you have to get back in line. Items cannot be returned early.

What happens after the check out period is over?
Even though the file stays on your computer you can no longer access it. You will need to manually delete the file from your device. However, if you have burned to a CD, these will still work indefinitely.
