Get a Library Card: Here's How!
It's easy. Just print the application
form (PDF), fill it out and bring it to any
HCPL library with your parents or guardian. If your
parents want more information about our library card,
go to the page Library
Card Policies.
- If you live outside Maryland,
it does cost $5.00 per year.
- If you lose your card, it
will cost you $1.00 to get another one.
- If you forget your card and
still want to check out books, it will cost
you fifty cents.
- If you owe fines or fees of
$10.00 or more, your card will be blocked. That's
right, kids' books & tapes have fines too.
So please be sure to return your library books,
tapes, and CDs.
- Sorry, but you won't be able
to check out feature DVDs or videos from the
adult department until you're 14.
- You can see what's on your
card by going to the My
Account page. You will be asked for your
PIN number after you type in your library card
number. Your PIN is the last 4 numbers of your
phone number.
- Here's how long you
can keep library books, videos, and other materials:
- books & music (check
the list at the information desk) - 21 days
- videos & DVDs - 3
days (but non-fiction DVDs and videos go
out for 3 weeks like a book)
- learning toys and DVD
sets with 3 or more discs - 7 days
- Here's how many things
you can take home:
- books & music - as
many as you can carry

- DVDs & CD Roms - 5
of each
- Book/tape combos - 3 of
each
- Learning Toys - 3 types
- You can usually renew most
things at least once. You have to go to the
My Account
page to do this, or call on the phone.
- You can return your books,
videos, and CDS to any branch.
- Here's the bad news: FEES
& FINES
- 10 cents a day for children's books;
20 cents a day for adult books.
- Videos, CDROM's, DVDs and similar things
are $2.00 per day. Please be careful.
- Luckily, there is a limit
to how much you can be charged. Here's the entire
list!
