Historical Fiction for 6th
through 8th Graders |
When young Widge's apprenticeship is purchased by a
theatrical manager, he finds himself immersed in daily
life at The Globe theater. His master wants Widge to
illegally copy Shakespeare's newest play, but Widge
soon finds his loyalty torn between his rather frightening
master and his new friends at The Globe.
This is the fictional tale of
Barry O'Neill, a first class passenger on the Titanic,
and his interaction with steerage passengers from his
hometown in Ireland, told against the historically accurate
backdrop of the sinking of the great ship.
This exciting and moving mystery
is set in 1850s Vermont. Jip was the name given to an
orphan boy by the overseer of the town poor farm - Jip
West because he fell off a "gypsy" wagon on West Hill
Road when he was a baby and was left behind. The truth
about where Jip came from is eventually revealed; meanwhile
Jip learns about human rights, helps his friends, and
discovers about the Underground Railroad.
Harriet Hemings is the daughter
of Sally Hemings, one of Thomas Jefferson's slaves.
Harriet has grown up with the rumors that she is also
the daughter of Thomas Jefferson. She has enjoyed her
life at Monticello, but as Harriet approaches her twenty-first
birthday she is given a hard choice - flee for her freedom
or stay in her happy home but remain a slave.
Every year the 6th grade girls
from two neighboring towns play a fiercely contested
though friendly baseball game. The first game after
the end of World War II has an extra edge because of
the hurts suffered during the war by two players: Aki,
a Japanese American, and Shazam, whose father was killed
at Pearl Harbor.
