More than a movie about a man who is searching for his origins, this film explores the parallel lives of a Belgian man and an Canadian inventor. Michel discovers later in life that he has been adopted, and hoping to find out more about his origins, he travels to Canada where he meets Louis, an inventor, as is Michel. The two may have more in common than their vocations, though, and as the narrative progresses, the parallels emerge.

Eighth Color of the Rainbow, directed by Amauri Tangara

Joaozinho's beloved grandmother is dying, and he has one shot at saving her. But he will need to travel to the big city, sell his lone asset, a little goat, and purchase the much-needed medicine for his grandmother. The city is full of dangers, but Joaozinho's love for his grandmother compells him to face those dangers.

Fireworks Wednesday, directed by Asghar Farhadi

Traditionally, fireworks are exploded on the last Wednesday before the Persian New Year, but Rouhi, a quiet domestic worker, witnesses fireworks of another sort in the household where she works. Her employers, a wealthy married couple, are engaged in a bitter marital dispute, one that threatens to unsettle their meek housekeeper, who herself is betrothed. All of this might make her wonder about the joys of marriage.

From the director of Turtles Can Fly, this film tells the story of Mamo, a Kurdish musician, who travels with his sons to Iraq to perform in a concert celebrating the fall of Saddam Hussein. On the long and difficult journey, he will confront terrible beauty and hardship.

Heartbeat Detector, directed by Nicolas Klotz

Simon is a corporate psychologist, who years before smoothed the way for a huge corporate downsizing (or "rightsizing," in euphemistic corporate language). Now he is tasked with the investigation of a CEO who may or may not be suffering from dementia. As Simon delves deeper into his company's structure and staff, he makes some intriguing and distrubing discoveries about the company's past and the past of those running it.

Nana, directed by Kentaro Otani

Drawn from a popular manga title by Ai Yazawa, Nana takes a look at two very different people who share the same name. Nana the first comes from a dysfunctional family and wants to be a rock and roll star. She's now seeking her big break. Nana the second, on the otherhand, has a more stable background and is as sweet-natured as can be. What could these two possibly have in common? Happenstance will bring them together, and the results are intriguing and satisfying.

Second Track, directed by Joachim Kunert

A suspense film from the former German Democratic Republic, Second Track offers viewers a tale of bold crimes and dark secrets. A train station inspector has witnessed a robbery but hesitates to turn in the culprit. Doing so might open up some secrets that are better left closed and hidden. Then the thief convinces his partner to pursue the inspector's daughter, and matters get far more complicated.

A Thousand Women Like Me, directed by Reza Karimi

Sharzad is a successful lawyer in modern-day Iran, but upon divorcing her wealthy husband, she has lost custody of her only son. Her husband, absorbed in his business, pays little attention to the necessary details in his son's life, life and death details, as it turns out, since the boy has diabetes. His father's neglect spurs on Sharzad to take matters into her own hands.

Two stories, one hope...Rosario has worked illegally in the U.S. for a number of years to provide a better life for her son, Carlitos, who remains in Mexico with his grandmother. When his grandmother dies, however, Carlitos must search for his mother, crossing the border alone, while she in turn searches for him. The obstacles thrown before them are formidable, but their hope to be reunited remains undaunted.

The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, directed by Cao Hamburger

Mauro's parents are in a hurry to slip out of their neighborhood and their former lives to go into hiding in 1970's Brazil. Their politics have forced them to go on the lam. They leave Mauro with his grandfather but without realizing that the old man has just died of a heart attack. Left alone, Mauro finds that his grandfather's neighbors are a ready network of support for the boy, who awaits his parents' return while witnessing the military crackdown of the political opposition.
