Comedy of Power, directed by Claude Chabrol

(in French, with English subtitles)

Isabelle Huppert plays a judge who meets corporate corruption head on, by going after a powerful CEO of a large corporation.  However, as the investigation deepens, the judge finds that the levels of corruption are far deeper and far more dangerous than she had imagined.

Fists in the Pocket, directed by Marco Bellocchio

(in Italian, with English subtitles)

Alessandro lives on a rural estate in Italy, along with his brothers and sister.   Epileptic and paranoid, he decides to eliminate his disfunctional family in order to free his elder brother of the burden of caring for them.  The setting of house and stark countryside, shot in black and white, becomes in itself a kind of character, closing in and trapping the family as much as the devious and methodical Alessandro.

Lights in the Dusk, directed by Aki Kaurismaki

(in Finnish, with English subtitles)

Koistinen is a nightwatchman, whose lonely nights stretch out before him, until he meets a femme fatale and a corrupt businessman, both of whom draw him into a series of dangerous misadventures, whose consequences he alone must face.

Offside, directed by Jafar Panahi

(in Farsi, with English subtitles)

It isn't easy being a female soccer fan in modern-day Iran.  When the Iranian soccer team competes for a place in the World Cup series, the stadium in Tehran is packed...with men.  No girls allowed in the boy's club house.  And if any women try to sneak into the stadium, they had better be disguised and not get caught.  Those girls and women who are caught are kept in a holding cell, where they can hear the roar of the crowd but not see a thing.  Nevertheless, none of that stops a group of determined female fans, who with the help of a sympathetic guard vicariously enjoy the thrill of the game.

Private Fears in Public Places, directed by Alain Resnais

(in French, with English subtitles)

Snow falling on Paris becomes a metaphor for the sad, pervasive loneliness of six characters, whose lives, interweaving with each other, beg for connection and resolution.
